The Complexity of Drag-and-Drop
Building a fluid, 60fps Kanban board (like Trello or Jira) is one of the most challenging frontend engineering tasks. When a user drags a task card from the “To Do” column to the “In Progress” column, hundreds of state changes and DOM repaints must occur simultaneously without dropping frames.
The DOM Repaint Problem
If you naively manipulate the DOM using traditional jQuery or Vanilla JS (e.g., physically moving the <div> element in the DOM tree while the user drags it), the browser is forced into a layout recalculation (Reflow). Reflows are computationally expensive. Doing this 60 times a second while the mouse moves guarantees stuttering and lag.
How LEDGER Project Command Solves This
To build the LEDGER Project Command OS, we bypassed direct DOM manipulation in favor of a Virtual DOM state machine combined with the HTML5 Drag and Drop API.
- Visual Ghosting: When a drag initiates, the original DOM element is visually faded, and a “ghost” element is created. This ghost element is absolutely positioned and tethered to the mouse coordinates using CSS
transform: translate(x, y). CSS transforms are hardware-accelerated by the GPU and do not trigger DOM reflows. - State Mutability: As the ghost hovers over a new column, we do not move the actual data in the state array. We simply calculate the insertion index based on collision detection logic.
- Atomic State Commits: Once the user drops the card, a single, atomic state mutation occurs. The item is spliced from the origin array and inserted into the destination array. The Virtual DOM detects this single change and patches the real DOM instantly.
IndexedDB Debouncing
Because LEDGER is a local-first application, the new state must be saved to IndexedDB. However, writing to disk on every single drag movement would choke the main thread. We utilize a Debounce Algorithm that waits for 500ms of inactivity after a drop event before serializing the board state and committing it to the local database.
Conclusion
High-performance UI engineering requires treating the DOM as a fragile entity. By offloading movement to the GPU and utilizing atomic state commits, LEDGER provides an enterprise-grade project management experience directly in the browser.
